Laid off? Find a brighter future at Lane
John Cotton
After the Vegas gaming
industry downsized and took his 25-year career
with it, John Cotton sought an alternative that
provided fulfillment,
income, and time
for his grandkids.
He found it through
the Walmart Brighter
Futures project at Lane
Community College.
Soon he’ll have a
one-year Baking and
Pastry Career Pathway
Certificate, and he’s
already thinking about
a two-year degree.
"Walmart Brighter Futures put me on the right road, giving me a 'yes I can' attitude."

Leanne Guthrie
Leanne Guthrie is well
on her way to a future in
Health Records Technology,
despite losing a long-time
job in construction office
administration, and a visual
disability. She came to Lane
Community College and
found a new career path
with help from workforce
programs and disability resources at the college.
"When I was laid off, I did not have the skills to compete in today's job market. If I had not participated in the Walmart Brighter Futures Project, I would have been stuck in a dead end job for the rest of my life."
