2008 ASLCC Voter’s Information

President/Vice President Candidate’s Statements

Josh Canaday/Jonathan Morton
J and J is the way.
We are dedicated to instituting a reliable system of fiscal accountability, which we seek to institute as an Executive office mantra and model for years to come.
We believe in Student Community.
Seeing as LCC is a commuter campus, we strongly feel that there is a great need for a place on campus for students to gather, socialize and express themselves while experiencing and building community.  We feel that having such a place will relieve traffic and noise from the library and study areas, create opportunities for student employment, and ultimately has great potential for lowering attrition and increasing success by developing a student culture.
We work for you.
Our focuses for this next year will be the issues that affect student’s right here at LCC as well as the State and Federal elections.  Our focus will be to preserve and promote programs that enhance and improve the school experience and to continue to advance the college’s commitment to sustainability.
We will enlarge the solar power installations on campus.
Our plan is possible with no additional costs to student fees.  We are passionate about keeping LCC on the forefront of what higher education looks like.
“We are the future!”
In our involvement with Student Government at LCC we have seen many turnovers and dropouts over the past two years, we are dedicated to fulfilling our yearlong duties and commitment to our fellow students.

Trillium Starchild/Meghan Krueger
It’s time for diverse representation. In a school where we welcome all different people in all walks of life we must have experienced leadership which understands and nourishes the unique potential within Lane‘ Student Body. We have spent this School year heavily involved with the Student Government and Student Groups. We look forward to building on the strong base, started this year, of passionate student involvement and leadership development in order to make the student voice loud and clear. We have been working with student groups and forming coalitions to create a strong advocacy for student issues. We will work with the administration to protect diversity and student rights on campus. We are also looking forward to continuing to work with the Oregon Student Association to advocate for Federal and State Higher Education issues.  We wont let our Federal and State representatives forget about the value of Higher Education and especially the importance of the Community College system. Improving accessibility to students who have a desire to be involved and change our community at large, has been and will be, our main focus.

Treasurer

Eric Edmond
I have been involved with the ASLCC since winter term of 2007. I joined the student Senate in the spring term of 2007.  I feel it is time for me to expand my wings yet again and move on to a new position of Treasurer.  Prior to coming back to school I had worked for Sony Disc Manufacturing as the Environmental & Safety Office Technician where it was crucial that all the data was error free.  I will use my experience in that position to bring the same exacting detail to the Treasurer position. I want to make sure that the student funds are spent appropriately and property tracked to comply with all local, state and federal laws for a non-profit organizations.  Thank you for your vote.  Eric Edmond

Charles V. Winn IV
My name is Charles Voknor Winn IV.  I am applying for the position of Treasurer. In order to maintain a strong constitution concerning the democratic processes that help deliver this country the great far reaching diversity it has, I would like to administer the affairs of government with a determined hand that supplies the signature to the purse strings that hold the funding to a committed effort that implements guided ideas for student advocacy.

Campus Events/Multicultural Program Coordinator

Liza Rosa-Diaz
Honestly, this has been my desire and passion for years. Having the opportunity to motivate, engage, and explore avenues of understanding between cultures, cultivate a community of excited learners, provide the student population with a rich and diverse cultural experience right here on campus is exactly the kind of humbling work that I love doing. Just this past year, working on events such as BSU Voter Registration Rally and Earth Week was lots of fun. Having the opportunity to be the BSU president here at Lane Community College, Representative on the Board of Oregon Students Of Color Coalition, On the committee for the Oregon Black Political Convention this past April and working with youth in our community, has been a great rewarding experience for me. I feel this is a wonderful opportunity for me to be of service to the Students here at LCC. There is a huge need for Multiculturalism here on campus and we cannot remain ignorant of it. I feel we are missing out on so much that the world has to offer, why not bring the world to us and benefit from its bounty. As the Campus Events & Multicultural Program Coordinator I will create events that exemplify multiculturalism and facilitate enriching and educational opportunities for our student body. If, as part of our mission statement of LCC, we say that one of our core values is Diversity, multicultural events are a wonderful avenue to ensure we meet and actualize that core value, prove that we can meet the diverse needs of our student body. And as your CEMPC, I am committed to uphold that ideal and provide a true Multicultural experience here on campus, one that will be remembered and hopefully duplicated for years to come.

Senators

Sam Bennington
As a senator, I intend to represent queer students. My work as an activist in this area informs my experience, and has provided me the skills to be an effective leader. I intend to put these skills to work for the greater student body, and to win more institutional support for students who are marginalized for their gender or sexual identity. Queer people are an important part of this campus, and the school could be doing much more to stand against social oppression.
Further, I want to do more to foster activism on campus. It is wonderful that so many students are involved here at lane, and, as a senator, I will see that that is adequately celebrated. It is necessary for the health of society that students working to combat environmental degradation, classism, racism, sexism, and heterosexism are encouraged by their educational institution. I want to be a friend to activists.

Bonnie Dominguez
All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us” And so I believe that one of the best ways to productively use my time is to help my fellow students. I will seek out the hidden and at-large problems throughout the campus and see to it that what I can do is done.  But know that I am not all seeing and need you to help me identify some of the problems.  One of my favorite things I have planned to do is to make the campus a more inviting place.  At the moment I have three places that I will focus on: the cafeteria in which we all try to socialize, but are slightly repulsed by the atmosphere, the library which could be better, and the little sport lounge in building 5 which needs a bit more spirit.
To describe myself a little I will say that I’m an organizational citizen, terribly honest and above all I value a good education.
Throughout the years I have proven that I have the ability to take on the task of being one of the ten senators of LCC.  I have been secretary to two clubs and a treasurer.  I have proven that I can be a team-player with my lacrosse experience.  I have volunteered for OSPIRG plenty and the DPO, and I’ve registered voters with the student vote coalition.  And so without going any further Thanks for voting!

James Manning III
I am currently an ASLCC student Senator and I want to continue to serve the student body next year. I sit on the Hiring Committee for the new Bookstore Manager that will meet next year. I plan to attend the meetings for this committee whether I hold a position on next year’s Senate or not. I also sit on the Campus Events and Book Consignment/Exchange committees. As a Senator, it is my duty and privilege to aggressively represent all Lane students to the absolute best of my ability and I will accept nothing less from myself. I am an action oriented individual and I strive for timely results. I am asking for your vote, so that I may continue to work hard for what is best for the students I represent. I thank you for considering me for student Senate.

Ric Miller
I wish to run for student senate in order to improve tolerance on campus. I will be a champion for student equality and inclusiveness. I will make sure that the yet unrepresented feel they can come to me to voice their concerns to be part of the broader conversation.
As a senator I will do everything in my power to see the big picture and advocate for the diverse needs of the campus community, not just as it is today, but as it could be in the future. I wish to make sure we are making progress in the sustainability, beauty, and respectability of our campus.
I am currently a "super volunteer" for the campaign to Re-elect Kitty Piercy for Mayor and I have worked for such political causes as the campaign to pass Measure 49 and the campaign to Elect Alan Leiman for Circuit Court Judge. I will be able to use my political experience to serve on the senate, but also come with an open mind.
Thank you for the opportunity to run for this important office, I will do all I can to earn your support.

Dylan Renner
While in high school I felt like I didn’t belong; I was a geek, a wanna be, a drama queen, and a below average student.  I was made fun of a lot and my friends were pretty much all I had.  I always wanted to feel important and be more than who I was.  My life was full of typical and atypical teenage angst, but I wanted to be understood.  I just didn’t know who I was.  Over time I slowly matured and started finding my true self.  I ended up dropping out of high school six months before graduation and got my GED, then moved to Eugene to begin my life with a fresh start.
This is my first term out of many at LCC and I plan to make them all count.  While I am here I want to be a voice for the students because everyone matters.  Every person at this college has a different life story, a different passion, and a different voice.  But no matter how different we all are we just want a sense of community and to be heard. I have already done a little work with the student government and I loved it; I loved watching students interact with each other and I am glad to be part of that.  I have an open mind and will work for fairness.  Vote for me.

Kelley Syphers
I, Kelley R. Syphers, am running for office because I want to make a difference for the little man/woman.  I also not only have a need and desire to serve my fellow mankind but also have a love for it.  If I were in office I would listen to the little man and try to do something for them.  I have served on the clients’ board at a non-profit organization.  Thank you for voting for me.

Kimberly Young
I am pursuing a position on the ASLCC senate because I love to be involved. I am currently the black student union vice president and have participated in many events so far including, the voter registration rally, Oregon Black Political convention and earth week. I love to reach out to people and help those who feel their voices aren't heard. As a pre-nursing student, I also consider myself a humanitarian and am willing to serve the good of humankind, whether it be educational, spiritual or financial. Being a minority in Eugene I have faced much adversity, sparking the passion in me to take leadership opportunities to help change things for the better. As an ASLCC senator there is possibilities to become more active in reaching my goals of confronting the issues we face on campus and in the community.  Thank you for your time and consideration. > Sincerely, Kimberly Young

ASLCC 08 Ballot measures

Election Results Advisory.  The Board of Education Policy D.090 provides as follows:  Students may be assessed a mandatory fee for the purpose of supporting a board approved student-initiated program.  The board will approve those student-initiated programs that it determines provide educational value to the students.  After board approval, the fee initiative will be placed on the ballot for the student elections.  The student election results, as they relate to the fee initiative, are advisory only.  After the student elections, the fee initiative will come before the board for final approval or disapproval.

ASLCC Mandatory Student Activity Fee Ballot Proposal:

OSPIRG Reaffirmation

Explanation: OSPIRG comes up for reaffirmation by student vote every three years.

The Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group (OSPIRG) offers students in Oregon the means to study and act on the problems facing society, engaging them on issues such as environmental protection, social justice advocacy, and consumer rights. Recently, OSPIRG has been working locally to alleviate hunger and homelessness, to make textbooks more affordable, to make politicians pay attention to student voters by registering them and turning them out to vote, to protect forests and clean up rivers, and to protect the rights of renters.

Note:  A yes vote will maintain the current level of funding and will NOT increase the student activity fee.  The fee will remain at the current amount of $46.25.

Ballot question:

Shall OSPIRG continue to receive support from student activity fees at a rate of $3.00 per student, per term?
