ASLCC 2009 Election Rules

Students taking credit classes on the main campus will be able to vote by online via ExpressLane. Students can access the ballot by going to Student Elections on Lane’s web page. Elections open at 4:00 am every day during the voting period.

All rules listed under Article IX, of the ASLCC Constitution and By-Laws shall apply to every election.

Rules for Display of Campaign Materials

  1. Campaign materials may be posted beginning Monday, May 5th at 7:00 a.m. and materials must be removed by Thursday, May 15, at 3:00 p.m.
  1. Posters may be placed on the two (2) windows on either side of the entrance doors in the Center Building Lobby, Business Building (2), P.E. Building (5) and Cafeteria.
  1. DO NOT place posters or campaign material on windows or walls of the Administration Building (3), Student Services Building (1) or the Science Building (16). 
  1. DO NOT place any posters or campaign material on any of the bulletin boards around campus. 
  1. NO POSTERS may be placed on any doors or walls.
  1. Use only masking tape for posting.  The custodians may charge extra for removing scotch tape that stays on glass. 
  1. Chalking on exposed, flat surfaces only.  No vertical surfaces such as walls or support structures. (You will be asked to take it off if placed on vertical surfaces and could be disqualified).  Let your workers know the rules.
  1. Lawn signs meeting the following criteria may be used by order of the grounds keeper.
    • Posters may be no larger than 22" x 28".
    • Stake size: 3/4" x 2" x 3'
    • Campaign signs may be erected near walkways, but not in the middle of any lawn, please stay within four (4) inches of the sidewalk as the sprinkler system is located very near this area.  Shrub beds are acceptable, however, stakes must not be tied or nailed to plants or plant roots. NO CAMPAIGN MATERIAL IS ALLOWED IN FLOWER BEDS
    • The roadways, on and off ramps and the median leading into campus are public roadways and no materials should be posted there.

Challenging Elections Process or Results

No Judiciary committee is in place for the 2009 Elections.  In the absence of a fully functioning judiciary committee during ASLCC elections the Elections Committee will review and decide all elections complaints under the guidance of the ASLCC attorney, as per Article IX of the ASLCC By Laws. 

Violations of ASLCC By-laws and Elections rules by candidates (or their supporters) may be grounds for disqualification of the candidate for that election.

Violations of these By-laws by elections workers may be grounds for invalidation of election results and a new election may be called.

All complaints regarding the election process and voting procedure must be delivered, in writing, to the Judiciary Committee prior to the close of voting. Any challenges to the elections process or voting procedure must be submitted in writing to the Elections Committee Chair, the ASLCC Legal Secretary or Director of Student Life and Leadership in a sealed envelope by 5:00 pm on May 14th prior to counting of votes.

Any challenges regarding the process by which votes are counted shall be submitted to the Elections Committee Chair, ASLCC Legal Secretary or the Director of Student Life and Leadership in a sealed envelope before announcement of the winners.

Representatives of the Elections Committee will set aside time each day during elections to review any complaints in a timely manner.  All complaints or allegations of elections violations will be addressed before the results are announced. 

If a challenge is submitted in accordance with these rules, the Elections Committee shall convene as soon as possible thereafter, to make a ruling on the challenge.  The Elections Committee shall determine the following by a simple majority vote:

  • Whether a violation has occurred, and if so, is it correctable?
  • Whether a penalty is appropriate.
  • What the penalty should be.

A written copy of the decision of shall be submitted to all parties involved. Decisions of the Elections Committee regarding election violations are final.

Election results are not announced until any pending complaints or allegations of elections violations are addressedOnce the results are announced the election is final and no further appeals or complaints are allowed. 

Students may use the Formal Student Complaint process to initiate an independent outside review of the election process.
