History
Cats have been part of the LCC community for over thirty years. In the early 90's, a committee was formed to try to stabilize the cat population. At that time there were approximately 40-50 cats living on the main campus grounds. Volunteers were recruited and the TNR (trap/neuter/return) program was instituted.
In January 1997, the LCC Animal Support Committee became an officially recognized non-profit group under the LCC Foundation. We exist solely on donations and receive no money from the college.
The LCC ASC currently consists of 10 members. Every day, including holidays, a volunteer committee member provides food and water to the cats. In the process members get to know each cat and are immediately aware of any change in the population. With hard work and diligence, we currently have a very healthy community of about 10 cats all of which have been spayed/neutered.
In addition to daily feeding and health checks, the committee traps any new cats or kittens and has them spayed/neutered. Adult neutered cats who cannot be socialized are returned to their original territory. Any kittens or cats that can be socialized are neutered and placed in good homes. Our trapping efforts from March 2000 to March 2002 resulted in the following:
