CASA hosts National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Pre-conference

The Ceramic Art Student Association (CASA) at Lane Community College hosted a National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Pre-conference held in Eugene on March 6-7, 2006. Every spring NCECA convenes at a national conference to stimulate, promote, and improved education in the ceramic arts. The 40th annual conference was held in Portland on March 8-11, 2006. This conference, attended internationally by approximately 4000-5000 academics, students, professionals, and the public, provides an arena to gather and disseminate information and ideas that are vital and stimulating throughout the creative arts community.

We have two primary goals in presenting this pre-conference event. First, to bring internationally renowned artists here to present their work, techniques and ideas to our community in an educational forum, and second to bring artists, educators, and students from around the country and the world to Eugene to showcase our schools and local ceramic community.

The Pre-conference will be titled “The Ceramic Surface-4 Approaches”.

Presenting Artists:

  • Katrina Chaytor - Associate Professor of Ceramic Arts, Alberta College of Art and Design
  • John Glick - Studio Potter, Plum Tree Pottery, Farmington Hills, Michigan
  • Matthew Metz - Studio Potter, Alfred, New York and Houston, Minnesota
  • Susanne Stephenson - Studio Artist, Retired Professor- Eastern Mich University

Keynote Speaker

  • Dr. Robert Poor - Art Historian, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN

The focus will be a discussion and exploration of some of the many approaches to 2-dimensional design as it relates to the 3-dimensional aspects of ceramics. Four renowned ceramic artists will present a two-day workshop open to the public that will include lectures, demonstrations of their techniques, and a panel discussion. The artists have been chosen for their diverse approaches to the ceramic surface and because they represent a broad spectrum of perspectives on the craft, as two are current or retired ceramics professors, and two are studio potters with a combined 60 years of experience in the field. There will be several ceramics exhibitions held in conjunction with this pre-conference that will be open to the public throughout the month of March.
