Introduction to Visual Arts

A lecture course supplemented by visual materials concerning elements, principles, and functions of the visual arts as seen from the viewpoint of the artist. Designed for the student with little or no background in the visual arts. Emphasis on developing visual perception, appreciation, and application. Recommend art majors take concurrently with Basic Design: Fundamentals (Art 115) and Introduction to Drawing (Art 131). Registration permitted any term. Also available through Distance Learning.

Graphic Design History

Team-taught, interdisciplinary approach to the history of graphic design and its relationship to traditional "high" art. Examines the chronology of graphic design history through an exploration of design styles, concentrating on design fostered during the 19th-century industrial revolution and how it evolves into the contemporary era.

An historical survey of major developments in Chinese art from Neolithic times to the 18th Century. We will discuss figure painting, sculpture, and ceramics, and emphasize development and stylistic changes in landscape painting. In addition, we will address the relationship of philosophy, religion, and foreign contacts to the arts.

Historical survey of major monuments and movements of Japanese art from prehistoric times through early 19th Century (including painting, wood block prints, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, and gardens). The course will proceed chronologically and thematically. The emphasis will be on stylistic developments and changes, themes and their interrelationships.
