Description: The collection consists of photographs, negatives, and slides taken by Sam Blackwell, instructor at Lane Community College. The images are of Continuing Education and Adult Education classes, LCC main campus, Downtown Center, LCC at Florence, LCC at Cottage Grove, Community Learning Centers, and seasons at Lane. Two articles and a brief biography by Blackwell are also included.

Biography: Sam Blackwell 
Samuel E. Blackwell was born in 1917 in Amarillo, Texas. He received a B.S. in Business Administration, 1939, from Abilene Christian College and an M.S. in Public Relations and Advertising from the School of Journalism at Syracuse University in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army, 1942-1946.
He taught at Lane Community College from 1968 to 2000. He taught communication skills in the English/Language Arts Department from 1968-1986 and co-authored a textbook for the course. He taught photography in the Mass Communications Department from 1968-1971 and in Adult Education (Continuing Education) from 1972-2000.
He traveled extensively. As an instructor for TraveLearn, a travel/study program of Continuing Education, he taught photography and led tours to Alaska, Egypt, and the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador.
Blackwell had a professional photography career in the aerospace, commercial, industrial, advertising, illustrative, and public relations fields. He has won numerous professional awards for journalism, photography, teaching, and volunteerism.
Sam Blackwell died in 2005.
Scope & Content Note
The
Samuel Blackwell Photographs and Papers contain black/white and color photographs, negatives, contact sheets, and color slides taken on the campuses of Lane Community College. This is an exceptional collection of images of both classroom activities and exterior views of buildings and grounds on most LCC locations.
The collection is divided into 6 series.
- Series A:
Autobiography and Writings, 1981-1983
- The collection includes a brief autobiography and two articles authored by Sam Blackwell: "Do You Have That Burned Out Feeling?" in Focus on Productivity, No. 3, Spring 1981; and "Communication Skills Program Still Among Nation's Best" in Focus on Productivity, No. 10, Spring 1983.
- Series B:
Photographs, Adult Education and Continuing Education Classes at the LCC Downtown Center, 1989-1998
- This series contains photographs and negatives of scenes of Continuing Education/Adult Education classes at the LCC Downtown Center. The images depict students in classrooms and participating in activities in a variety of courses offered by the Adult Education program. The collection also includes a series of photographs taken at the LCC Downtown Center open house on November 14, 1989.
- Series C:
Photographs, LCC at Cottage Grove and Florence, 1993-1999
- Series D:
Photographs, Community Learning Centers, 1994-2001
- Series E:
Photographs, LCC Main Campus, 1969-1983
- This series contains black/white and color prints and negatives taken of buildings on main campus including images of buildings under construction. There are numerous photographs of the construction of the Performing Arts Building in 1973-1974. There are also several images of the campus in winter, covered with snow, and in spring, with trees and flowers in bloom.
- Series F:
Slides, LCC at Florence, Cottage Grove, Downtown Center, and Main Campus, 1969-1997
- This series contains color slides taken of buildings, grounds, and other exterior scenes at various LCC locations.
