1. Leadership Scholarship Recipient-Amber Tillett
Amber was the guest of honor at our first meeting of the academic year. Amber is the mother of 3 children with GPA of 3.6 and working two jobs. Amber's greatest life challenge has been being a single mother at the age of 16. She earned her GED a month before her daughter was born. She was determined to not be a "statistic." She began the dental assisting program a few years after her daughter was born. She currently is president of the American Dental Hygienists Association. She plans on attending OIT for a bachelor's degree. Eventually she would like to teach Dental Hygiene. Her volunteer work will include work with disadvantaged youth such as Americorp's Aspire program. Amber received the $1500 scholarship for this academic year. Because of this she was able to let go of one of her jobs, allowing her a little more time to study and raise her 3 children.
Criteria for the AAWCC Leadership Scholarship include demonstrations of leadership, significant life challenges, progress toward career goals and the potential to give back to the community. Amber has met all these criteria. Congratulations Amber!
2. Annual Conference Information-November 18-19, 2004
Leadership 1974-2004-A Thirty Year Perspective is the focus of the annual conference held at the Portland Airport Sheraton. Six women from Lane will be attending. If there is someone out there who would like to attend, please contact Donna Zmolek, Chapter President, as there may be some money to help with the registration fee.
3. Holiday Silent Auction Planning-Date to be announced
Discussion as to where to hold the annual silent auction took place. CML, private home, Multi-Cultural Center or the Student Life and Leadership area were all considered. It was decided that the Multi-cultural Center would work great, depending on the availability once the date has been determined. Donna has e-mailed Mary Spilde to ask about a date in December when Mary is free, and then we can schedule the event. A potluck or pizza? Donna will look into the price, etc of the pizza, and attendees can bring a side dish as well. Donations are being solicited for the auction. If you do any crafts or know someone who does please contact them regarding a donation. Ideas from previous years: candles, gift baskets, scarves, gift certificates from Renaissance Room, Bookstore or anywhere else, and handmade cards where some of the ideas. Carol Woodman, VP of Finance, will be gathering the donations at her office Bldg 19, Rm 231 (Cooperative Education).
4. Membership Update-Shirley Lukacs
Shirley Lukacs, VP of Membership, will be updating the membership list. Right now it is estimated that we have around 70 members. Discussion regarding how to promote the organization followed. Jackie Bryson, VP of Communication, and Shirley will contact The Torch.
5. VP Professional Development-Vacancy
MaryJo Workman has stepped down as the VP of Professional Development. Contact Donna or any board member if you are interested in this position.
6. Goals for the Year
Son Le Thi, VP of Special Projects, is putting together a workshop for later in the year on Lane women mentoring and supporting each other through life transitions.
- Donna gave out a handout regarding last year's goals at the meeting, and she asked that members be thinking about goals for this year. If you would like a copy of the handout, please contact Donna Zmolek at ext. 5750.
- Shirley Lukacs agreed to host a viewing of "Iron Jawed Angels" at her home sometime in November. "Angels" depicts suffragettes and the pain they went through as they fought for women's voting rights. Donna and Shirley will work together to schedule a date.
7. Web page-Son Le Thi
Son Le will be putting together a webpage for the AAWCC. She hopes to have it up and running sometime in November. Thank you so much Son Le!
